You can think of it as an implicit tutorial if you want, except that the levels are designed to still be fun (if easy) after you've learned the game. The best way to introduce mechanics is through level design in the first level or two that force the player to use them, as described in these videos. What is wrong with missing two skills for the first couple of simple, under five minute missions? Quick turn I admit seems silly to leave out, but again seems less mandatory for the first couple of missions which in ME1 were essentially "Go straight, take a broad right/left, go straight again, climb this, success." Roll landing is only really necessary with long-jumps and heights, and most of the first missions will not have those in the way that later missions will. I feel that you're forgetting a lot of the running skills depend on set pieces that they would purposely avoid in the first missions anyway. So you're saying that a forced tutorial, which itself acts as an irritation and a barrier to REAL in-game immersion, is better than a gradual introduction of skills which, when placed between the first few missions of a game, ACTS as a gradual tutorial that also progresses the story and shows player-character improvement? It's easy to see how inflicting a very minor, fleeting irritation to long term fans to achieve this would be considered a good tradeoff. Remember, they're not just making the game as fan service to devotees of the original, they're trying to capture an entire new audience. Of course the people who understood what the game was trying to do and stuck with it were rewarded, but surely there is value in imposing a more gradual introduction for the benefit of newcomers. This was a big turn off for a lot of people trying the original game coming to ME from virtually any other first person perspective title just feels wrong. The developers said that in testing, people were more inclined to dip their toes in each skill when they were revealed via this progressive unlocking mechanism, making progression in ability more well-rounded and smooth.įurthermore, the basic traversal is pretty disorienting for new players. The rationale has been put forward, and there is some sense in it.
